WOW!!

Now that the yellow Iris's in the middle planters are in the compost bin - there was great debate as to what should go into the empty planters......

UNTIL!!

Nerrine donated massive bunches of thyme & Guli donated some Turkish basil & Nadira donated some tomatoes!! We now have a fantastic kitchen garden planted up in the planters!!

Not only that - but Zoulla, Cyprus, Nerrine & Nadira spent the whole day weeding, composting & planting the containers!!

Then Tom, Safiri & Sennur watered them all in.

The whole of Leabank Square can soon help themselves to these lovely ingredients.

Leabank Square Gardening Club

Some of you may have noticed a bit of gardening happening in & around Leabank Square of late. This is the work of the Leabank Square Gardening Club.

We meet on Monday afternoons on the green - but also do some work over the weekends as well.

At the moment it's only a couple of adults & loads of younger kids strong. We would LOVE to have some older kids & more adults join us.

If you are interested - then please simply pop on to the green or river bank or staircases or sidewalk - or wherever we are working that day - and grab a fork & some seeds!!

Please don't worry if you don't have 'green fingers' - you only need a pair of hands to water the garden or dig a few holes!

If you want any more info - then please email leabanksquare@london.com & we'll send you some general info - but nothing beats popping over for a chat!

While I'm on the subject - please can I say a MASSIVE thank you to both Simon & Zoulla for not only donating much needed compost - but also buying & delivering it to us!! The soil here in Leabank Square definitely needs this welcome gift - so thanks heaps!!

Consortium Anyone?

Just in case anyone missed this - Zoulla has sent this enrty to the forum site (http://leabanksquare.lefora.com/headlines/) inviting the rest of the residents to join up with the existing Mosaic tennants association here in Leabank Square.

This is such an excellent idea - and I have already signed up - but please think about it. Leabank Square needs to have a true voice - and we can only do that if we ALL speak as one.

This way we can apply for grants, change the management company, organise Square activities, lobby Hackney Council - in short - feel together!

With the help of Mosaic Homes some of the Mosiac tenants have started this process. Hello!!

By now we should all have received the latest newsletter. If you are reasonably new to Leabank Square & haven't yet been told about this community website - then Welcome!!

If you've been here yonks - and have just found out about this website - then I'm very sorry! It's my fault entirely.

If you're one of our many visitors to this blog-site - then you obviously won't be receiving the newsletter through your door.

But - hey!! Everybody is very welcome to let us know what you think about this blog, the newsletter, Darfur, Global Warming, the price of milk lately - or even about how lovely you think Leabank Square is!!

I know not everyone in Leabank Square is fortunate enough to have access to a computer - so if you have a neighbour who gives you a blank stare when you ask them about this blog - please invite them in for a cuppa & show them the blog-site!

But I will save up the pennies & hopefully bring out a more regular newsletter with the highlights of topics discussed on this blog. This way - we will get to involve more Leabank Square residents.

Leabank Square Wishing Tree

A massive thank you to Mustafa & his wonderful family for donating this beautiful rubber tree to Leabank Square!!

The tree is now in one of the greens planters & doing well.

All the children helped plant it & Nikolai came up with a fantastic idea.

They named it the Leabank Square Wishing Tree.

It works like this: every time you walk past it - you make a wish & smile at the tree. Your wish should come true if you truly smile with honesty!!

So - at the risk of looking a bit loopy - please make very positive wishes each time you pass it. And if you happen to win the lottery - please buy Leabank Square a massive palm tree to plant smack in the middle of the green.

If you're a shopper - then ALL your dreams are going to come true in a few years time. One of the largest shopping centres in the UK is coming a few minutes walk from Leabank Square!

All you're going to have to do is walk over the new footbridge across the canal - and through the Olympic park.

Westfield Stratford City, which is due to open in 2011, will house 300 shops and restaurants. The development will dominate the East London retail catchment, with brands jostling for supremacy with 1.2m ft2 site that will form the gateway to London 2012's Olympic Park.

The site will also act as a hub for those travelling to the new Stratford International Station, using Eurostar services from Europe.

Marks & Spencer has joined Waitrose and John Lewis to become one of the first retailers to commit to the site. M&S has signed a contract with the developer to establish a flagship store in the area.

Westfield Stratford City will also provide leisure and entertainment opportunities. The Chestnut Plaza outdoor shopping and dining space will host concerts and events as it looks to establish itself as a cultural destination.

Nick Gray, managing director at retail design agency Live & Breathe, which works with Zavvi and Bluewater, claims the development's 'community feel' will sustain it.
'It is not just a regular shopping centre,' he says. 'A community is being built around it that will attract a wider consumer audience. It is likely to provide a blueprint for future shopping centres in the UK and abroad.'

Planners hope the 180-acre Stratford City site, which will eventually also include offices, hotels and about 5,000 new homes, will be a magnet for further regeneration investment in the Lower Lea Valley area around the Olympic park.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

I am in no way saying that it is good to gamble & I need to warn you that the chances of winning are a Squillion to one - but the lovely people at Premier around the corner need your help.

They have a petition on their counter to raise a thousand signatures to help get a lottery machine into our local newsagent.

I said I would tell you about it - so if you want an easily walkable trip to do your lottery - then please pop down to add your signature.

Food For Free

The first few edible fruits of ALL your children's labours are starting the ripen.

We will have our first peas & blackberries along the Lea Bank any day now. I know that some of you have been a bit doubtful about Leabank Square actually producing some food - well in the next few days you will be able to start tasting the fruit of your children's labours!!
